The scammers pretend to be with the sheriff's department, police said.
COVENTRY, RI — Scammers are spoofing the Coventry Police Department phone number and pretending to be with the sheriff's department, police said.
"We’ve received several reports today of scammers 'spoofing' the Coventry Police Department’s main phone number 401-826-1100," the department posted to its Facebook page Thursday.
"This means the number appears on caller ID even though the call is not coming from us," the post said.
