Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Much of Rhode Island

The warning is in effect until 3 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect across parts of Rhode Island until 3 p.m.

The National Weather Service says the warning is focused on the central part of the state, mainly Kent and Providence counties with the highest risk for Coventry, North Kingstown, Cranston, West Warwick and Smithfield.

But the warning covers nearly all of Rhode Island, including Bristol and Newport counties.

Hail damage is possible and wind gusts could push 60 mph,the weather service said.

"Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm," the warning stated. "[It] may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways."
