WEST WARWICK, RI — A West Warwick man was convicted Wednesday in Kent County Superior Court for molesting a girl under age 14 between 2006 and 2008, Attorney General Peter Neronha said Friday.

Following the conclusion of a three-day trial, a jury found Nelson Carreiro, 42, guilty of two counts of first-degree child molestation. Prosecutors said Carreiro will be held without bail until his sentencing on April 28.

"No result in a courtroom can undo the traumatic harm the defendant caused the little girl he sexually assaulted here, but I hope today's verdict brings some measure of comfort to her and her family," Neronha said. "I commend this child for her courage in coming forward, and ultimately doing an extraordinarily brave thing: Confronting her accuser and ensuring that he will no longer be able to harm others."

"He now faces a long state prison sentence, and deservedly so," Neronha added. "I am grateful to the Rhode Island State Police for their continued outstanding work and partnership in this case, and in so many others."

During the trial, state prosecutors proved that between 2006 and 2008, Carreiro sexually assaulted a girl he knew several times at an apartment in East Greenwich. The victim reported the molestation after she moved out of state, and the case was forwarded to state police for investigation.
