Wintry Mix Bringing Snow, Wind Gusts, Raw Chill To Parts Of RI

Many areas will see snow showers Monday and Tuesday with temperatures well below normal for early April.

The warm ground will prevent any accumulation on the roads, but there could be a slush coating on grassy surfaces — especially in communities like Woonsocket, Smithfield, and Coventry.

RHODE ISLAND — Areas of northern ad western Rhode Island will see a snowy mix at times on Monday and Tuesday as a winter chill provides a raw greeting to the first full week of April.

Monday and Tuesday will feel anything but like spring, according to the National Weather Service, with bouts of spitting snow and sleet accompanying temperatures in the 30s. The warm ground will prevent any accumulation on the roads, but there could be a slush coating on grassy surfaces — especially in communities like Woonsocket, Smithfield, and Coventry.

Monday will be a raw and very chilly day overall, with a high of 39 degrees and an east wind steady at about 10 mph. Precipitation will be spotty throughout the afternoon on Monday, with a chance of more steady snow and rain arriving late in the day.

Tuesday will start off with another chance of rain or snow before the sun arrives mid-morning into the early afternoon. Temperatures will struggle to hit 40 degrees, however, with a strong northwest wind gusting to 36 mph, making it feel much colder.

Mid-week will feature a series of very cold nights, with residents advised to move in or cover any vulnerable plants and flowers that have already been brought outside for the season.

The low temperature for Tuesday night is forecast at 28 degrees, with a low of 31 on Wednesday night.
