2 Arrested In Boston In Connection To Running Over Cranston Police Officer's Foot

Police say Michael Campagna and Megan O'Brien were wanted in connection to a shoplifting incident that ended in an officer firing her gun.

CRANSTON, RI — Rhode Island State Police said they arrested two people Tuesday in Boston who were wanted in connection to an incident that resulted in a police officer getting her foot run over and firing her gun.

Michael Campagna, 24, of Boston, and Megan O'Brien, 24, of Lynn, Massachusetts, were arrested at the JFK train station in Dorchester, Massachusetts. State police said the arrest was assisted by the United States Marshals Service, Massachusetts State Police, Boston police, and Cranston police.

Police said the arrests stemmed from a shoplifting investigation at Garden City Shopping Center in Cranston on Sunday. The shoplifting report came in around 5:15 p.m. Five minutes later, an officer found the suspect's car at a red light on Reservoir Avenue near the on-ramp to Route 10 in Providence, Cranston police said.

According to police, a Cranston officer walked up to the car, opened the driver's door and told Campagna and his passenger, O'Brien, to get out. Police said the man refused, and the woman told the man to drive away.

Then, Campagna ran over the officer's foot, so the officer fired one shot in response, according to Cranston police. Police said the driver then sped away on Route 10 northbound.

Police said the officer was treated at Kent County Hospital in Warwick and has since been released.

Campagna was charged with felony assault and/or battery, assault on a police officer, reckless driving/eluding an officer, obstruction of an officer in the execution of duty, resisting arrest and conspiracy. O'Brien was charged with felony assault and/or battery, assault on a police officer, aiding and abetting (assault on a police officer), aiding and abetting (reckless driving/eluding), and conspiracy.

O'Brien was also arrested on a felony shoplifting warrant, while Campagna was charged with misdemeanor shoplifting.
