Mayor Hopkins Defeats Fenton-Fung In Cranston Republican Primary

RHODE ISLAND — In what was arguably the most high profile election this Rhode Island primary season, Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins has defeated challenger Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung in the Republican mayoral primary.

In Cranston, Hopkins faced a primary challenge from state Rep. Fenton-Fung. Fenton-Fung is also the wife of former long-time Cranston Mayor Allan Fung, who has been at her side along the campaign trail.

Local police and fire unions both endorsed Hopkins, who will hope to rely on their support, once again, when he faces Democratic City Councilor Robert Ferri in the November general election.

"As for our endorsement of Mayor Hopkins, the IBPO 301 endorsed Mayor Hopkins for re-election because he is a genuine person, and a great leader," Cranston police union President. Michael Caramante said. "His support for public safety was clear from day one."

Fenton-Fung was expected to be a strong challenger to Hopkins, as she has faced incumbents before. In 2020, she unseated then-House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello in 2020 during her first attempt at public office.
