Cranston Woman Charged In Connection With Pet Dog Knox's Death

The dog belonged to ex-Pat star Jerod Mayo. He said the family was not prepared for the awful news and was devastated.

CRANSTON, RI — A Cranston woman faced a judge Monday in connection with the death of Knox, a pet dog that belonged to ex-Patriot Jerod Mayo. Mayo last saw the dog in May after entrusting the dog to a trainer's care. Amelia Ferreira, 41, the trainer, originally claimed the dog got loose and ran away. That report led to a search for Knox. But Cranston police pointed to inconsistencies in Ferreira's story. Monday, the Rhode Island SPCA reported the dog's body had been decomposing for weeks in a plastic bag inside the woman's house. She hid it in a closet and finally led investigators to the dog's remains on Sunday.

According to the Cranston police report, Ferreira claims she left Knox in a crate in an air-conditioned room inside her Edgewood home. She returned a few hours later. He was dead.

Police charged her with a misdemeanor for Obstructing justice, since she allegedly lied to police and hid the dog's body.
