Transit Mask Mandate, Including RIPTA Buses, Extended To May 3

PROVIDENCE, RI — Masks are no longer required in most setting in Rhode Island, but transit passengers will still need face coverings, at least for a few more weeks. On Wednesday, the Transportation Security Administration again extended the requirement for mask-wearing on all forms of public transportation until May 3.

The requirement includes Rhode Island Public Transit Authority buses, as well as trains and airplanes. It has been in place since Feb. 1. 2021, and was most recently extended to April 18 in March.

"RIPTA is committed to following TSA guidelines to keep our employees and passengers safe while we continue to navigate through this pandemic," CEO Scott Avedisian said.

Masks are not required for children under the age of two, or for people with a disability that prevents them from safely wearing a face covering. Qualified exemptions must be obtained before getting on the bus by calling RIPTA customer service at 401-784-9500, ext. 2012.
