PROVIDENCE, RI — For the second week in a row, Rhode Island's average gas prices fell, though marginally. Over the past week, the average price per gallon fell by a penny, bringing it to $3.39.
Rhode Island remains higher than the national average, which is six cents lower at $3.33.
Lloyd Albert, a spokesperson for AAA Northeast, said that gas prices tend to fall this time of year due to less demand and shorter days.

Rhode Island’s average gas price is down 1 cent from last week ($3.40), averaging $3.39 per gallon. Today’s price is 3 cents lower than a month ago ($3.42), and $1.27 higher than December 13, 2020 ($2.12). Rhode Island’s average gas price is 6 cents higher than the national average.
"This trend was assisted by the recent steep drop in oil prices due to fears over the omicron variant," Albert said. "But the variant’s impact on pricing appears to be fading, so it remains to be seen if oil prices stabilize or move higher."
