PROVIDENCE, RI — A proposed law would ban the sale of miniature alcohol bottles, commonly known as nips, in Rhode Island. The legislation is one of several regarding plastic waste and packaging set to be considered in committee this week.

If approved, the bill would ban the sale of plastic, glass or metal bottles of alcohol 100 milliliters or less. Airplanes and trains would be exempt, provided all waste is collected and disposed of before arrival.

The bill is one of several addressing waste scheduled to be taken up by the House Environment and Natural Resources Committee this week. Also on the docket: a bill that would ban the use of disposable polystyrene foam containers and plastic stirrers in restaurants and a statewide plastic bag ban. Both bills were introduced in the previous session, but did not receive approval from the full General Assembly.
