Rhode Island Dubbed Worst State For Retirement

A recent WalletHub study was not kind to the Ocean State.

If you’re thinking about retirement, you might also want to think about moving.

WalletHub ranked Rhode Island last out of 51 (including the District of Columbia) on their ‘Best and Worst States to Retire’.

The project considered affordability, quality of life, and health care. Rhode Island ranked last in affordability, 45th in quality of life, and 36th in health care.

Florida was the top state.

Affordability took into account:

  • Adjusted cost of living.
  • WalletHub’s ‘Taxpayer’ rankings.
  • Taxation on pensions and social security income.
  • Annual cost on in-home services.

WalletHub has been rather brutal to Rhode Island, ranking it the worst state for doctors, the second-worst state for student debt, and particularly upsetting: the 8th worst state for summer road trips. Ouch.

It’s not all bad news. Last year, WalletHub ranked the Ocean State second-best for anti-bullying laws and policies.

Poke around the map below to see how each state ranked.
