RI Secretary Of State's Office Cleans Up Voter Rolls

Since 2015, the Secretary of State's office has legally removed 182,018 outdated voter records.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island is continuing to clean up voter rolls to ensure election integrity, Sec. of State Nellie Gorbea's office announced Friday.

"Rhode Island’s voter rolls are the cleanest they’ve been in years," Gorbea said. "My team and our local boards of canvassers conduct voter list maintenance every single day. We also work with the Department of Health and election officials in other states to preserve accuracy while adhering to strict federal laws for voter removal."

Since 2015, the Secretary of State's office has legally removed 182,018 outdated voter records, Gorbea continued.

There are currently 713,481 active registered voters in Rhode Island. On top of that, 88,786 voter records have been marked inactive, the start of a multi-year process of removing them under federal law.

Voter record updates come from the Division of Motor Vehicles, death records from the Department of Health, notifications that a voter may have moved to another jurisdiction and data analysts within the Secretary's office.

This month, around 25,000 voters who may have moved recently will receive mailings encouraging them to update their record, if needed.
