RI Teachers Union Calls For 1 Week Of Distance Learning

PROVIDENCE, RI — If Rhode Island schools weren't strapped enough dealing with rapidly climbing COVID-19 cases, this week will bring more challenges with the arrival of frigid temperatures. In response, the National Education Association of Rhode Island is calling for a week of distance learning, statewide.

"The responsible decision, based on the overwhelming number of cases, the inability to do meaningful contact tracing, the arctic temperatures we are expecting so windows cannot be opened, the insufficiency of supplies, etc. etc. is to move to distance learning until next Tuesday," said Robert Walsh, Jr., the organization's executive director.

The organization also called for five changes to be made going forward in Rhode Island schools:

1. Superintendents must have the ability to shift to distance learning to accommodate staffing shortages and other barriers to in-person learning.
2. Districts must be able to move to distance learning if sufficient KN95 masks are not available daily for staff and students.
3. Tests need to be readily available in each district for students and staff who need them.
4. During distance learning, all students must have access to breakfast and lunch.
5. Students must have access to health services during distance learning, including mental health supports.

"Until this current vertical surge of COVID-19 is abated, NEARI strongly recommends these guidelines be followed to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of students and staff," the organization said in a tweet.
