Roger Williams Park Zoo Celebrates 150 Years In Operation

The zoo will mark the occasion with celebrations throughout April and all year long, including a time capsule by the iconic sentinel dog.

PROVIDENCE, RI — A lot has changed in Rhode Island over the last century and a half, but at least one thing has stayed the same. This year, Providence's Roger Williams Park Zoo celebrates its 150th anniversary, making it the third-oldest in the country.

The parcel of Roger Williams Park was officially designated a zoo in 1872, at the time a "scattered collection of small animals purely for entertainment." Since then, the zoo has expanded and grown, focusing more on education and animal conservation. In 1986, it was the first in the region to be accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquarium, and was certified humane by American Humane in 2018.

The zoo will mark the milestone anniversary throughout 2022, with a slate of fun events starting in April including a time capsule by the iconic sentinel dog, discounted admission and more. Here's a look at the schedule for the special kickoff weekend from April 1 through 3:

  • April 1: Burying of the time capsule at the sentinel dog, featuring dignitaries and other special guests.
  • April 2: Party for the Planet Earth Day celebration. Free admission for Providence residents (proof of residency required).
  • April 3: $1.50 admission for visitors, along with treats from Dunkin' Donuts, live entertainment and more. Special birthday treats for the animals throughout the day. (Advance tickets required for non-members.)

Throughout the birthday celebration, there will be a timeline showing photos and milestones throughout the years. Every day for 150 days, one guest will receive a special grab bag with special birthday treats and prizes. The zoo will also host contests and ticket giveaways on its social media pages.

Rhode Islanders will also see the zoo's special 150th anniversary float at parades throughout the state this year, starting with the Providence St. Patrick's Day parade this weekend. It will also make appearances at the Gaspee Days and Bristol Fourth of July parades this summer.
