A May Nor'easter? RI Braces For Winter-Like Storm This Week

RHODE ISLAND — Harsh winds, heavy rains and the potential for coastal flooding and damage are on the way across Rhode Island this week as a winter-style nor'easter batters parts of New England on Thursday.

A week of below-normal temperatures and gusty northeast winds will culminate on Thursday with the storm that may have been a major snowmaker at a different time of year. While the temperatures will remain far too warm for anything wintry, it will be a mess of a day with persistent rain, and wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour along the coast, with widespread gusts of up to 30 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Some coastal damage is possible with the onshore flow from the persistent northeast wind. The strongest winds are expected on Block Island and around South Kingstown.

The steadiest rain is expected to begin late Wednesday night and last throughout Thursday into Thursday night.

The high temperature for much of New England on Thursday will fail to get out of the 40s with up to 2 inches of rain possible.

There is expected to be slow improvement after that through the Memorial Day weekend.

The NWS said rain is most likely Friday morning before it becomes mostly cloudy in the afternoon with a high temperature of 59 degrees.

Saturday is forecast to be a high of 62 degrees, with the chance of showers and a diminishing wind.

Sunday and Monday are looking much better, with a high of 67 degrees under partly sunny skies on Sunday and a high of 68 degrees on Memorial Day.
