Suspect At Large After Officer-Involved Shooting In Cranston, Officer Injured

Cranston police say an officer shot her gun at a shoplifting suspect after they ran over her foot in an attempt to escape.

CRANSTON, RI — Authorities are investigating after Cranston police said an officer shot his gun Sunday evening at a suspect who ran over her foot in an attempt to escape arrest.

Cranston Police Maj. Todd Patalano said they got a report of shoplifting at the Garden City Shopping Center around 5:15 p.m. Five minutes later, an officer found the suspect's car at a red light on Reservoir Avenue near the on-ramp to Route 10 in Providence, police said.

According to police, a Cranston officer walked up to the car, opened the driver's door and told him and his female passenger to get out. Police said the man refused, and the woman told the man to drive away.

Then, the man ran over the officer's foot, so she fired one shot in response, according to Cranston police. Police said the driver sped away on Route 10 northbound and was last seen on Niantic Avenue.

The suspect remains at large. Police said his vehicle is registered in Massachusetts.

Police said the officer was treated at Kent County Hospital in Warwick and has since been released.
