BB Gun Found At High School

Student who reported seeing a BB gun on the floor in boys bathroom is allegedly the same person who left it there.

Supt. Victor Mercurio said a student was removed from East Greenwich High School Thursday morning after allegedly leaving a BB gun on the floor of one of the boys bathrooms there.

Mercurio said the boy, a junior, went to Asst. Principal Tim Chase at 7:45 Thursday morning to report seeing a BB gun on the floor in the bathroom closest to the cafeteria.

"The student who reported it was in fact the individual who put it there. He admitted it," Mercurio said. "Police were called in. The student was removed from the building."

It's unclear why the student left the gun there. According to Mercurio, the gun resembled a handgun.

Police said they were still investigating but Mercurio said he anticipated the boy would be arrested for the offense. The East Greenwich School Department has a zero-tolerance policy with regard to guns.

Mercurio said that policy covers a variety of possible gun-like weapons: "If it has the ability to project anything, it’s an issue."
