EG Police Catch Narragansett Break-In Suspect

A car parked behind Cumberland Farms early Saturday morning raises suspicions during patrol.

A Wakefield man with an extensive history of burglary was arrested on a charge of breaking and entering after being found with the cash register drawer from a Narragansett Dunkin’ Donuts in his car while it was parked behind an East Greenwich Cumberland Farms.

The car was parked on the grass behind on South County Trail early Saturday prompted East Greenwich police to investigate, leading to the capture and arrest of Allan Jett, 54. Jett later confessed to a number of burglaries in South Kingstown.

EG Police were suspicious when they came upon a Ford Escort parked behind the Cumberland Farms on South County Trail at 2:30 early Saturday morning.

No one was around, but the car’s hood was warm. According to EG Police Lieutenant Jay Fague, a cash register drawer could be seen on the back seat of the car. Less than an hour earlier, according to the report, police were notified to be on the lookout for a suspect in a break-in at a Dunkin Donuts in Narragansett.

According to Narragansett police logs, at about 2:01am on Saturday the burglar alarms at Dunkin’ Donuts in the North End of town went off. When officers arrived at about 2:08am, the assailant had already left.

According to police, the glass of the drive-through window was broken, and fresh footprints were found in the grass leading toward Rite-Aid.

In East Greenwich, police parked on either side of South County Trail, waiting for the suspect to return to his car and drive away.

At 3:10am, the car pulled out and police stopped it. The driver, Allan Jett, 54, of North Providence, told police he was coming from Narragansett where he had been fishing in the Middle Bridge area and that he had stopped at the Cumberland Farms to relieve himself. Police noticed that the cash drawer was now covered with a gray sweatshirt.

During a weapons pat down, police found Jett had $180 in cash. When asked where the cash was from, the man said some kids were playing with a couple of cash register drawers by the river while he was fishing. He said they got scared off and that he then took cash and one of the drawers. At this point the police notified Narragansett Police.

Narragansett Police Detective Ryan Prest made the arrest at the scene after Jett admitted to the theft upon seeing a surveillance photo from the Dunkin Donuts where the break took place.

Jett was transported to Narragansett Police headquarters at 4:49am and was charged with felony breaking and entering, and malicious property damage.

The owner of the Dunkin’ Donuts said that about $400 had been taken between two registers. The damage to the window was about $500. Security cameras in the store confirmed that the window was broken by a rock, and the thief then broke into two cash registers.

While in custody, Jett confessed to three additional robberies in South Kingstown, according to reports. He said that he had recently begun using crack cocaine again. Jett has either been on probation or at the ACI since 1988, according to online court and ACI reports.

EG Police Lieutenant Fague said Tuesday that EG Police have been on higher alert since a early Wednesday morning, July 13. That incident is still under investigation.

"They were just keeping an eye out for something out of the ordinary," Fague said.
