EGHS Boys Soccer Beats Narragansett 1-0

East Greenwich earns the determining goal in the first half of the Friday afternoon game

East Greenwich would score the only goal of the game in a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Narragansett Friday afternoon in boys’ soccer action.

The Avengers (4-0, 4-0 Division II-South) scored in the 33rd minute. Off of a corner kick, freshman Gregory Kehoe put a ball toward net that senior Derek Ferra was able to tap in.

“It was a good ball by Kehoe,” Ferra said, adding that it led to an easy tap-in for him. “I didn’t know if he meant to cross it or shoot it.”

Narragansett head coach Ryan Kanaczet said that although his team lost, he was happy with their this early in the season, against another Division II team he expects to see near the top of the standings.

“It wasn’t a bad loss, East Greenwich is number one in our division,” he said. “We had opportunities to tie it and win it … We’re still working kinks out, and we know how competitive the league is.”

The Mariners’ (1-1-2, 1-1-2 Division II-South) best opportunities came in the second half. In the 63rd and 64th minutes, Narragansett had two attacks at the goal from less than five yards out sail out of bounds.

For their part, the Avengers also missed opportunities to extend their lead. Mariner goalkeeper Zachary McKanna turned away several shots, and East Greenwich players also whiffed on several attempts to finish crosses.

Senior captain Connor Pease said he thinks his team will convert on more of their opportunities as they mature and get more varsity playtime under their belts.

“A lot of them haven’t started [before], but they have been here two years,” he said. “I think we were a little unlucky, but as we go along in the season, that’ll turn into goals.”

East Greenwich plays 3:30 p.m. Monday at Pilgrim (1-1-3, 0-1-3 Division II-South). Their next home game is 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, when the Avengers host Westerly (0-1-2, 0-1-2 Division II-South).
