Five Activities For A No-School Day

By day three of Sandy school-less-ness, we could all use a few new ideas....

The kids may be thrilled to have another day off, but for parents and caregivers all that free time can wind up being something less than positive. Especially if there's no power.

We can't help with the power, but we can offer a few ideas of what to do.

1. Visit Boesch Farm and the animals of Pat's Pastured. Did you know there are sheep and cows and chickens and pigs and turkeys and ... well, you get the idea. It's a wonderful place and it's right in East Greenwich on South Road.

2. Have a pumpkin-seed-spitting contest. It sounds gross and is gross but really what's better than gross for kids?

3. Head to Roger Williams Park Zoo. It's open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the temperature will be in the 60s today.

4. Tour an EG cemetery or two. It will get you in the mood for Halloween and you can read the gravestones and think about all the people who lived here before us. There are, of course, the big ones (EG Cemetery off First Avenue and St. Patrick's off Sixth Ave.) but there are literally dozens and dozens of others. My favorite? The cemetery at the end of Wine Street in the Harbour section of town.

5. Have a contest with your family: How many trick-or-treater's will you get at your house tonight?

These are a few ideas, but I'll bet you have others. Share them in the comments section – we all could use the help!
