Vampires in Rhode Island: The Tillinghast Nightmare: In 1799, Exeter, R.I., members of Stukely Tillinghast’s family were dying. To save the lives of those remaining, Tillinghast knew what he must do – dig up the body of his beloved daughter Sarah, cut out her heart and burn it. Two other “vampire exorcisms” have been documented in Exeter – Ruth Ellen Rose in 1874 and Mercy Brown in 1892. The Tillinghast Nightmare documentary explores Rhode Island circa 1799 in an effort to make sense of this gruesome practice. The findings may surprise you. Sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction. A free film screening will be held tonight  at 6:30  at the East Greenwich Free Library. A Q&A with The Tillinghast Nightmare filmmaker Alec Asten will follow.

Future of Medicaid conference: “Future Trends: Opportunities for Collaboration in the Developmental Disabilities Community” will bring together some of the most innovative and knowledgeable people in Rhode Island to analyze pressing challenges related to changes in Medicaid at the federal and state level, to discuss the most effective solutions, and to initiate a sustained dialogue that will enable Rhode Island to prepare for positive change in serving the community of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The keynote speaker will be former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy. At the Crowne Plaza, 801 Greenwich Avenue in Warwick. Registration and breakfast from 8 to 8:30 a.m. Conference from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

Avenger home games: The Girls Field Hockey team meets North Kingstown this evening, JV at 6 p.m. and Varsity – it’s Senior Night! – at 7 p.m. For the latest information about EGHS sports, check out the Avengers Booster Club website.

Pumpkin sale for a good cause: That pumpkin patch in front of the EG United Methodist Church on South County Trail isn’t just a joyful scene (those it is that in spades!). Proceeds will benefit Janice Wray, East Greenwich resident and URI nursing student, suffered serious injury in a car accident on April 1st of this year which left her paralyzed and in a wheelchair.  After almost 4 months in hospitals she has come back home to her family and now faces a new path of healing and recovery within her local community.  While her positive spirit and determination to overcome and succeed is remarkable and an inspiration to many, the road ahead for her promises to be long and arduous, with many as yet unknown obstacles and medical expenses.

Mark Schwager volunteers meeting: State Representative Dist. 30 candidate Mark Schwager is holding a pre-election meeting tonight for people interested in volunteering for his campaign, at 6:30 p.m. at Coldwell Banker Real Estate on Main Street. Any questions feel free to contact our campaign chair at 401-323-2710 or Mlenihan3@verizon.net.

Your photo for 'Five Things'? I'm looking for readers to upload fall photos to be featured here, in the "Five Things" column. Help EG Patch showcase scenes from around town and get a little visibility for your photography too! If you take a picture today that captures a slice of East Greenwich life (this time of year, autumn leaves, pumpkins, scary Halloween decorations, would be great!), upload it right here.
