Five Things: EGLL Opening Day, Container Gardening

Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, April 27.


EG Little League Opening Day: Events start at Academy Field, where teams muster for the annual Opening Day Parade down Church Street along Main Street to Fifth Street to Cragan Field. The parade begins at 10 a.m. but teams gather starting at 9. It's small-town fun at its best. Play ball!

Pot It Up – Container gardening workshop: Eager gardeners can dig right in with a program on container gardening at the East Greenwich Free Library today from at 2 to 4 p.m. Cindy Wood Garden Club Marnie Sandham, club member Marcia Pearce and master gardener Margo Hyde will show how you can create spectacular edible and decorative plant containers using a variety of plant materials. The finished containers will be raffled off as door prizes.  Seed packets and instruction sheets will be available at no charge. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library and the Cindy Wood Garden Club.

Avenger Home Action: Boys Varsity Lacrosse plays Mount St. Charles at 11 a.m.; Boys Varsity Baseball plays Cranston West at 11 a.m.; and Boys JV Lacrosse plays Mount St. Charles at 1 p.m. You can follow all the Avenger action at the EG Booster Club website here.

Pitch, Hit & Run: The East Greenwich Parks & Recreation Department will be hosting the local competition of the annual Scotts Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run skills day at Eldredge Field. This skills competition was developed to provide youngsters across the country an opportunity to participate in an exciting baseball and softball skills competition. This national program gives boys and girls, ages 7-14 (age as of July 17, 2013), the opportunity to feature their batting, throwing, and base-running abilities.

Autism Walk & Family Fun Day: The Autism Project is hosting its 11th annual Imagine Walk and Family Fun Day for Autism at Goddard Memorial Park. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m. The walk will be followed by a family fun event with lots of activities for the entire family. April is Autism National Awareness month, please join us and walk an extra mile for a child with autism.

Fundraiser for Celeste & Sydney: The mother and daughter seriously injured in the Boston Marathon bombings last week, Celeste and Sydney Corcoran, have local ties. Their husband/father is Kevin Corcoran, born and raised in Quidnessett. There is a fundraiser for them Monday at Rok Bar and Grill, starting at 5:30 p.m. You can get tickets ahead of time ($20 each) at Felicia’s Coffee.  

The Switch Energy Project: East Greenwich High School is hosting a viewing of The Switch Energy Project on Monday, April 29, at 7 p.m.! Switch is a groundbreaking film focusing on the problem we have at hand with the use of non-renewable energy resources. The producers of Switch traveled the world to discover ways we can make the switch to renewable resources. Everyone is welcome to attend and learn how we can all help to make a difference! All EGHS science students can also receive extra credit with their science teachers if they attend the showing and provide their teachers with the ticket the following day in class. Please come support the EGHS Science Department and the future of our planet!
