Your guide for life in East Greenwich today, Oct. 15.
Fire District Ballot Question Forum:Â Come out tonight to learn more about the Fire District and the possible pros and cons of bringing it under the umbrella of the town, as a fire department. At Swift Community Center at 7 p.m.
EG Farmers Market: There are three EG Farmers Markets left this season, so let’s make the most of it! There will be pumpkins, baked goods, seafood and meats, tacos and dahlias. The market goes from 3 to 6 p.m. on Academy Field at Rector Street. There’s easy parking at the joint town-church lot on the opposite side of Academy Field, next to Swift Community Center. Looking ahead, there’s a costume contest on the final Monday, Oct. 29.
EG Preservation Society meeting: The East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Alton Jones Campus at its monthly meeting on tonight. Guest speaker Todd McLeish will give an illustrated talk about the history of the 2,300-acre wildlife preserve. President Dwight Eisenhower was often a guest at the estate, owned by Getty oil executive W. Alton Jones. It was donated to URI by his widow in 1962. Todd Jones is an author, environmentalist and former juggling champion. His most recent book is "Rhode Island's Natural Laboratory: A History of URI's W. Alton Jones Campus." The meeting begins with a potluck supper at 6:30 at Society headquarters, 110 King St. – the Old Jail. The program begins at 7:30. The meeting is free and open to the public. Please call Susan Curado at 884-4643 to reserve a place.
Pumpkin Patch at EGUMC: The East Greenwich United Methodist Church is sponsoring a weeklong pumpkin patch, leading up to their Harvest Festival on Saturday. All proceeds will go to the Wray Family of East Greenwich. EGHS alum Janice Wray was seriously injured in a car accident earlier this year. Proceeds will help the Wray family with costs not covered by insurance.
Open Jam Night: The Greenwich Hotel’s Open Jam session takes place every Monday night. All musicians are welcome and even non-musicians with rhythm can join in on the percussion instruments. This is Open Mic with a twist. It is a more relaxed format. You are encouraged to jump in and start playing. This makes for an interesting and unique night of music. A full PA set up with mics, cords, bass amp, electronic drum kit, bongos, djembe and other percussion instruments are available.
Avenger home games: Boys Soccer versus Westerly, Varsity at 3:30 p.m. and JV at 5:30. Girls Volleyball against Pilgrim at 6:30 p.m. And Girls Tennis, JV only, against Barrington at 4:15 p.m. For the latest information about EGHS sports, check out the Avengers Booster Club website.
