Obituary: Avis B. Gardiner, 87, Former EG Town Clerk

Avis B. Gardiner, 87, passed away June 3. She was the wife of the late Vernon E. Gardiner. Born in East Greenwich she was a daughter of the late James B. and Helen (Stoddard) Spencer.

Mrs. Gardiner worked for the Town of East Greenwich for over 20 years retiring as the Town Clerk in 1994.

She was a member of the D.A.R., Nathaniel Greene Pettaquamscutt Chapter. She is survived by three sons, Steven J. Gardiner, Mark E. Gardiner and his wife Brenda, and Brian P. Gardiner and his wife Lori; four grandchildren, Lisa, Danielle, Adam and Joshua; two great grandchildren, Landon and Emilia; and a brother Ellsworth Spencer. She was the mother of the late Sylvester R. “Butch” Gardiner and the sister of the late Robert, Andrew and James “Pep” Spencer and Barbara Nicholson.

Funeral service Friday at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of East Greenwich, 35 Peirce St., East Greenwich. Burial will be in the R.I. Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Calling hours are Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be made to the First Baptist Church of East Greenwich.
