Take Them All Out To The Ball Game: Opening Day In EG

Hundreds of kids and parents turn out for the annual EG rite of spring known as the Little League Opening Day parade.

There just something about little league opening day festivities that makes you think all is right in the world. Even with the array of alternative sports that are now played in the spring (around here, lacrosse and soccer), baseball remains a touchstone sport.

So it was on Saturday.

The weather was perfect as children, coaches and parents gathered at Academy Field for the annual Opening Day Parade. Kids ran around playing and mugging for the camera, parents sipped coffee and coaches checked rosters.

Then the parade. Marchers went from Church Street down to Main Street to First Avenue, across 2nd Street to to Fifth Avenue, and down to Cragan Field, home of East Greenwich Little League. At Cragan, there were speechs for the adults and a dressed up baseball diamond for the players ... and the fully-stocked, very busy snack bar. The first game wasn't played until afternoon but the season was off and running.

Play Ball!
