'Tar Tar' Ucci, Gov. Carcieri Top '13 EGHS Wall Of Honor Inductees

EG sports legend Anthony "Tar Tar" Ucci and former Gov. Donald Carcieri lead the recently selected 2013 class for the EGHS Wall of Honor. The installation ceremony will take place next spring.

They are joined by Coast Guard Admiral Richard Bennis, an unsung hero of 9/11; URI Medical Director Fred Procopio; longtime EGHS French teacher Linda (Catanio) Alix; and former NCI agent, Peter DeRestie.

This class will be inducted next spring at an installation ceremony to be held at the East Greenwich High School Auditorium. The traditional early announcement allows honorees coming from other states enough time to make travel plans, and for others to organize family and friends to attend the event. The ceremony, which usually takes one hour, is followed by a reception in the school cafeteria where old friends can meet, eat, and talk over the old times here in East Greenwich.  

This is the sixth class to be inducted into the EGHS Wall of Honor. Previous classes included:

2008: Robert "Terry" Bergeron, Bell Labs researcher; Wilma Briggs, professional women's baseball player; Donald "Ducky" Kettelle, EG's first football All-Stater; Raymond McKone, athlete & businessman; Nicola "Nick" Carcieri, longtime EGHS coach and teacher.

2009: Mark Thompson, Pulitzer Prize winner and Time magazine Deputy Chief; John Sinnigen, athlete & veterinarian; Janet Joyce, head of EG's Welfare Department; Rudolph Mattiace, Broadway dancer; John Leyden, athlete, businessman, and TV personality; Thaire Adamson, EG Historical Society & author; Wesley Card, head of New York's Jones Apparel Group.

2010: Ernest Franzone, businessman & athlete; Walter Taylor, Volunteer Award winner; Michael Romano; teacher and college professor; Stanley Strembicki, internationally known photographer; Amadeo Franzone, businessman, athlete, patriot; Leonard Solomon, businessman and philanthropist; Marion Fry, woman pioneer and politician.

2011: Glenn King, U.S. Marine, manager Red Stone Arsenal; Kenneth Ford, NASA Director; Robert Corrente, U.S. Attorney; Alan Para, naval aviator and Nobel Peace prize winner; Mary Lou Sicco, school nurse; Robert Brown, war hero and successful CEO of several big companies; Robert Leyden, businessman and local personality.

2012: Angela Bertholdt, URI Track star; Judith Briggs, insurance executive; Rear Admiral Nevin Carr Jr., Naval leader; Frank Forster, athlete, teacher, coach, official; Deidre Kettelle, E.G. Town Clerk; W. Everett Lundberg, business executive; Howard Silverman, local businessman and sports sponsor. 

Each year the event also honors individuals who make a contribution to the East Greenwich community with voluntary efforts on the behalf of others.

At the 2013 ceremony the honors will go to husband and wife Michael and Anna Zaino for their longtime commitment and contributions to the betterment of East Greenwich and its environs. An award will also be given to Carl I. Hoyer for his longtime efforts on behalf of the town and the local schools.

They will be given a plaque of appreciation from the Wall of Honor for their altruistic endeavors to benefit the quality of life here in East Greenwich.

The Wall of Honor Committee consists of Bob Houghtaling, chairman; Chris Cobain; Jean A. Guliano; Carl I. Hoyer; Janet Johnson Joyce; Robert Lallo; Elaine Mastracchio; and Bruce Mastracchio, nominating chairman.
