Experience Rhode Island’s Unique History In Foster
Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Foster so special.

Foster is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Foster has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- The town was named after Theodore Foster, a Revolutionary War Patriot and attorney born in 1752. He was the first U.S. Senator to hail from Rhode Island and played a part in the burning of the Gaspee.
- The Foster Country Club, established in 1894, is one of the oldest golf courses in Rhode Island. The course is open to the public and is known for its beautiful views and challenging terrain.
- Foster is also home to the historic Foster Meetinghouse, which was built in 1796. The meetinghouse is still in use today and is open for tours and events.
- The town is also known for its annual Foster Fair, called Old Home Days, which is held every July. The fair features a variety of activities, including rides, games, live music, and local food vendors. It's a great opportunity to experience the local culture and community spirit of Foster.
- The George Washington Memorial Campground, located in Foster, is a popular spot for camping, hiking and picnicking. The campground features over 45 campsites, as well as a playground and a fishing pond.
- The Ponagansett Reservoir near Foster is a popular spot for fishing. The reservoir is stocked with a variety of fish, including bass, trout, and perch.
- The Foster Public Library is a historic building that was built in 1887. The library is home to a collection of over 25,000 books, as well as a variety of programs and events for both children and adults.
- The Foster Preservation Society is a great place to learn about the history of the town. The society operates a museum that features artifacts and exhibits about the town's past, and also organizes historical tours of the town.
- Foster is home to the historic Foster Village, a collection of historic homes and buildings that date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the village to learn about the town's history and architecture.
- The town has several parks and recreational areas, including the Foster Town Beach and the Foster Town Park. The beach offers swimming, sunbathing, and fishing, while the park has playgrounds, picnic areas, and walking trails.
- The Moosup Valley Congregational Church is a historic church built in 1864 that is an example of the Greek Revival architectural style. It is open for tours and for religious services.
- The Foster community has a strong sense of volunteerism, with various local organizations and clubs that are active in the community such as the Rotary Club of Foster, Lions Club and Foster Garden Club. These organizations host events, fundraisers, and volunteer projects throughout the year, giving residents and visitors many opportunities to get involved in the community.
