Former Portsmouth Rec Director Turns Himself In

Timothy Dunbar, 42, of Middletown, faces embezzlement and other charges.

MIDDLETOWN, RI — Timothy Dunbar, 42, of Middletown, was charged on Saturday with two counts of embezzlement by a public official; six counts of obtaining money under false pretenses, and six counts of providing a false document to a public official/employer.

The Town's former part-time recreation director turned himself in. The charges stem from an investigation that started over beach receipts. The finance department noticed "irregularities" and contacted Town Administrator Richard Rainer. Rainer ordered an audit and also called in Portsmouth Police Department detectives.

The investigation allegedly showed Dunbar had embezzled cash from the rec department funds and claimed pay for six times when he was not working.
