WEST KINGSTON – In early November, 13 Girl Scouts from South Kingstown and Narragansett received their Silver Awards in a ceremony at Camp Hoffman on Ministerial Road in West Kingston.

The Silver Award is the second highest girl achievement award in Girl Scouting. Girls may begin and complete this award in sixth, seventh or eighth grade as Girl Scout Cadettes.

The Girl Scout Silver Award recognizes a girl’s accomplishments in Girl Scouting and her community as she grows and works to improve her life and the lives of others.

To earn the award, the girls had to design and carry out a plan of activities that include exploring careers, gaining leadership skills and making a commitment to self-improvement.  The final requirement is completion of a community service project.  Girls generally put in far more time than the suggested minimum of 50 hours to complete their projects.

Two Girl Scouts from Troop 585 earned their Silver Awards.  Molly Murphy's project was "Make the World Smile," and Samantha Rendine's was "Illustrate Your Love for Reading."  Their leader is Laurel Murphy.
