NARRAGANSETT, RI — Power restoration effort continue around the clock in Rhode Island, as the state works to clean up the damage caused by Tropical Storm Henri.

Approximately 100,000 Rhode Islanders were affected by outages at the storm's peak, National Grid Rhode Island President Terry Sobolewski said, resulting in multi-day outages for many, especially in the southern part of the state.

The "vast majority" of customers will have power restored by the end of the day Tuesday, Sobolewski said Monday morning, though isolated, individual outages could take longer to address.

Until the power comes back on, follow these tips to stay safe while using a generator, from the Narragansett Police Department and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

  • Always use generators outdoors, in well-ventilated areas away from doors, windows and air vents.
  • Ensure carbon monoxide alarms are installed and properly functioning in the house.
  • Never use a generator in a wet environment, which can cause shock or electrocution.
  • Connect appliances to the generator using high-quality, heavy-duty extension cords.
  • Never refuel a generator while it is running. Spilling gas on a hot engine can cause a fire.
