30 Plays in 60 Minutes
Weather put a kibosh on your fun? The Contemporary Theater Company opens up with "Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind" tonight, indoors, at its theater in the commons.
WAKEFIELD – The Contemporary Theater Company launches its summer season with a riotous production of 30 plays from “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind” at its Studio.
Created by the Chicago-based Neofuturists in 1988, every night is a one-of-a-kind race against the clock. The performers scramble to show all 30 plays, in an order of the audience’s choosing, before 60 minutes are up.
Packed with the Neofuturists’ wild, high-energy style, the show features a large and rotating cast.

Among the ranks are Spencer Curry, Grace Danna, Meghan Rose Donnelly and Laura Kennedy of South Kingstown, Jaden Franklin of Narragansett and Amy Lee Connell and James Foley of Providence. Connell recently starred in the company’s 2011 production of “Romeo and Juliet” and Foley is a star with the Providence-based Bit Players.
South Kingstown residents Sarah Pease-Kerr, Shawn Fennell and Artistic Director Christopher J. Simpson join the Bit Players’ improv guru Ryan Hartigan at the directing helm.

“This production combines our penchant for artistic innovation with our signature style and energy,” Simpson said. “It’s the perfect fit for a South Kingstown summer, as the 30 plays are brief, fun and lively.”
The fun starts before the show with three options to purchase tickets. Attendees may roll a six-sided die and pay the number shown plus $11 or they can negotiate with a member of the ensemble. For those looking for an easier option, a ticket is just $15. On July 21 only, there is no set admission in keeping with a company policy of no set prices for Thursday performances. Audience members are instead encouraged to donate what they are able.
“Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind” plays July 8, 9, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23 at 7 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on July 17. The Contemporary Theater Company Studio at the South County Commons is located at 50 South County Commons Way, South Kingstown, R.I. and is handicapped accessible.
