5 THINGS: Cruising, Boccing and School Committing

There are plenty of activities for a Tuesday! Catch the fun times!

Here are the (more than) Five Things for Tuesday, August 21, 2012:

Got an issue for Langevin? As part of a day spent meeting with constituents in South County, Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) will discuss ways to ensure all Americans can have a secure retirement with residents of Wakefield’s Brightview Commons retirement community at 3 p.m.

  • Among a series of stops in the area earlier in the day, Langevin will tour the Jonnycake Center in Peace Dale at 11am and visit the Marina Park Farmers Market at 2 p.m.

Why isn’t this an Olympic sport? The South Kingstown Senior Center’s bocce club (and plays!) at 10 a.m.

Just my price, I’ll take it! Maury Loontjens Memorial Library is hosting free viewings of The Hunger Games at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. You might have heard of it, I believe it’s a movie about archery.

mmm, Produce. The Marina Park is at 2 p.m. today. Buy some awesome potatoes.

Speaking of growing stuff… URI offers of its botanical gardens for $5, at 5 p.m.

Cruising but not for bruisings. It is at the South County Commons, starting at 5 p.m. This refers to classic cars, and not those trips Kathie Lee used to hawk. Check out classic cars, live music and food.

“Plan” to be there – ha ha ha! The Narragansett Planning Board at 6 p.m.

Don’t let your interest erode in our coast. The URI Bay Campus is a lecture on Rhode Island’s eroding coast at 6:30 p.m.

School IS right around the corner… The South Kingstown School Committee meets at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

A gallery benefit show! There is a gallery show of Stephanie Parker’s work to benefit the Courthouse Center for the Arts. The exhibit is on display until Sept. 9, and open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON! Starting in early September, we’re going to be phasing out the adding of new calendar events by our staff. This means that if you’re from a group or organization, you’ll have to start doing them yourself. It’s pretty simple, though! While logged into your Patch account, just go here. Adding your event ensures it’ll show up in searches, and be eligible for me to give it shout-outs in Five Things.

Sign up for our daily newsletter! Hey, I realize we have a lot of neat features and knick-knacks on the site, so it can be confusing to keep up with it all. Want just one simple, easy to read daily digest? Sign up for our e-mail newsletter here then. It comes out between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. roughly, every single day of the week. Amazing, I know!

Sacre bleu!!! On this day in 1911, the Mona Lisa was stolen by an employee of the Louvre.

Speaking of Le French… Happy 28th birthday to French pop star Alizee.
