5 THINGS: Sports Edition! Awards and Season Status
Looking for an update on the latest in Narragansett and Narragansett-area sports? Well, one of these "five things" should apply then.

Here are the Five Sports Things for Wednesday, December 21, 2011:
- No perfect season. In basketball action Tuesday night, the Mariners fell 83-68 to the Westerly Bulldogs, thanks to some hot second half shooting by Westerly's Austin Cilley. The Mariners will attempt to get off the schnide, as a horrible hack broadcaster would say, on Thursday, as they host the West Warwick Wizards at 7 p.m. Early in the season, West Warwick looks like the class of Division II, as they demoralized and destroyed the Chargers on Tuesday night.
- Wondering about girls' basketball? Us too! The girls' also played this week, on Monday night, but a score has yet to be posted to the RIIL website or to RIHS Sports as of Wednesday morning. If you happen to know if the team won, well, feel free to let us known in the comments below, or on Twitter or Facebook. The Mariners are next in action at 7 p.m. at Tiverton.
- A slew of girls' soccer players honored! According to head coach Kathryn Mahoney, several girls on this year's soccer team were honored with postseason team selections. Emily Wright led the honors, as she was named to Second Team All-State and First Team All-Division. Chelsea Sahagian was named to First Team All-Division as well. Jackie Iannucci and Carla Porras made second team, and Dolci Wagner made third team. For the Division III tournament, Sahagian was named MVP, with Porras, Wright, Wagner and Abby Soscia named to the All-Tournament team. Mahoney said the team also earned the Sportsmanship Award, which was voted upon amongst all the Division III referees.
- Ten football players honored. According to head coach Richard Fossa, 10 different Mariner football players received postseason honors. For Division III, members of First Team All-Division were Mark Griffith (safety), Francis Castrovillari (linebacker), Jack Durkin (offensive line) and Dillon Sheridan (offensive line). Making second team were Willie Perkins (running back), Jimmy Kershaw (defensive back), Zachary Flynn (offensive line) and Jared Baptista (defensive back). Honorable mentions were Brian Chausse and Daniel Stern-Lonczak. The Providence Gridiron Club picked Griffith as the offensive MVP, and Kershaw as the defensive MVP.
- Got a college athlete? Let us know! We're going to start incorporating college athlete reports into these Five Things updates. Right now, I'm using a self-cultivated list, which you can find . Are we missing someone playing a prep school, junior college or college sport? Let us know! Typically, I'm interested as long as they a) List Narragansett as their hometown; b) Graduated from NHS or c) Graduated from Prout.
