Here are the Five Sports Things for Wednesday, December 28, 2011:
- The Narragansett boys' basketball team is hosting the Mariner Holiday Basketball Tournament today and tomorrow, starting at 6 p.m. each night. The Mariners (2-2, 1-2 Division II-South) play East Greenwich (1-4, 1-1 Division III-South) tonight, followed by a game with Fitch or South Kingstown (1-2, 0-2 Division I-South) on Thursday. All games are being held at Narragansett High School.
- The girls' basketball team plays in a holiday tournament at North Kingstown at the same time as the boys on Wednesday and Thursday. (So if you're a spectator, it's a real Sophie's Choice for you, I know.) The Mariners are 4-1 to start the year, and 3-0 in Division II-South play. Narragansett is scheduled to face South Kingstown (0-4, 0-3 Division I-South) on Wednesday, followed by North Kingstown (3-2, 2-2 Division I-South) or Cranston East (3-3, 2-2 Division II-South) on Thursday.
- In non-tournament action, the boys' hockey team hosts Middletown at the Boss Ice Arena on Wednesday. What time, you say? Why, 6 p.m., of course, conflicting with both basketball games. It's essentially a Pu Pu platter of sports for you to chose from. The Mariners are 0-5 overall and in Division II-South play, and have been outscored 45-11 by their opponents. In contrast, Middletown is near the top of the division, with a 3-1-1 record and a +10 goal differential. The boys' also play Friday at the Boss Ice Arena, as the visiting team against East Greenwich (3-1, 3-1 Division II-South), and travel to the Dennis Lynch Arena to play Portsmouth (4-1, 4-1 Division II-South) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
- Hey, the University of Rhode Island men's basketball team has to win another game at some point this year, right? Maybe they'll do so while visiting Disney World... Well, to play in a tournament, that is. The Rams play James Madison at 9:30 p.m. tonight, followed by a game Thursday against Stetson or UCF, time dependent on their result Wednesday. Neither game is being televised, but both are being broadcast on B101. In case you haven't been paying much attention to the Rams, well, no one can blame you. They're 1-11 this year, and have lost eight straight, including most recently to rival Providence College. And by the way, leading scorer Jamal Wilson was just thrown off the team, according to the university and The Providence Journal.
- And finally, to recap some more All-Division honors, the player list for girls' volleyball has been posted to the Journal's website. Sophomore Gabrielle Leclerc and junior Hannah Maymon made first team All-Division II-South, with senior Samantha Sabetti earning second team honors.
