5 THINGS: Wrestling, Swimming with the Tax Code

Save on your taxes, thanks to a course at Maury Loontjens Library, or check out some high school sports.

Here are the Five Things for Thursday, January 26, 2012:

Pier School boys’ basketball team starts playoff run today. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to cover middle school sports as much as we have in the past this year. However, barring something unforeseen in town, we will be at the boys’ playoff game today in East Providence. The Mariners beat Curtis Corner on Friday, forcing a three-way tie for third and fourth place in the Southern Division. As a result, Narragansett travels to Riverside Middle School, which finished 8-4 in Central Division play, for a 3:30 p.m. contest. For directions, click here, or punch 179 Forbes St., East Providence, into your GPS.

Maybe they’ll carpool together. Speaking of East Providence, that’s the site of tonight’s swim meet between Narragansett High School (2-3, 2-3 Division I) and the Bay View Academy (1-3, 1-3 Division I). For directions to the East Providence High School pool, click here.

Wrestling looking for revenge tonight. Unfortunately, the high school’s wrestling team (6-7, 6-4 Division II-South) dropped a match to Ponaganset (10-3, 9-1 Division II-North) on Wednesday night, 45-36. However, the grapplers get a chance for redemption right away, as they host Middletown (2-7, 2-7 Division II-South) at 7 p.m. tonight. The Pier School also had an exhibition at the high school last night – We were there for a bit to take a couple photos and some video, and we’re just waiting for results from the full card before publishing. Look for that later in the day. The three individual wrestlers for the Pier School compete at middle school states in Cumberland all this weekend.

Be like Mitt. Wondering how you can save a bundle on your taxes? Sandra Cutting of H&R Block will be talking about the changes in the tax law at 7 p.m. at the Maury Loontjens Memorial Library. For more on the event, click .

Happy birthday to Marshon Brooks! You’ve gone from a bad college team where you were the primary focal point of the offense to a bad professional team where you’re the second option of the offense. On the plus side, you get paid several million dollars for it, so that’s always nice.
