Broncos Muzzled By Mariners, 22-0

Using a dominating, punishing attack on the ground in some miserable weather, the Mariners dominate all aspects of the Homecoming tilt with the Broncos.

Using a dominating rushing attack led by seniors Willie Perkins and Frank Castrovillari, the Mariners sent the crowd home happy with a 22-0 win against Burrillville on Homecoming Saturday afternoon.

A steady rain turned the field conditions to mush and favored a bigger, stronger Narragansett (4-2 Division III) team. Castrovillari finished with a touchdown, and 93 yards on 15 attempts, and Perkins had a pair of touchdowns and 100 yards on 12 attempts.

The Broncos (0-6 Division III) struggled to earn yardage most of the day, especially through the air. Quarterback Patrick Scotland finished 4-for-10 for just 25 yards, and threw two interceptions.

Narragansett’s Jimmy Kershaw kept his interception streak alive with one of the picks, and Jared Baptista had the other. Senior Connor Timpson forced a fumble, and Greg Hamilton and Deontae Stanley both recovered fumbles.

In contrast, the Mariners stuck to the ground. Quarterback Mark Griffith only attempted one pass, a long bomb at the end of the first half that went incomplete.

Field conditions led to a slick football, and Perkins had a pair of fumbles along with one for Griffith, but none ended up hurting the Mariners. Narragansett killed clock for much of the fourth quarter, using repeated runs from Griffith and Castrovillari to ice the game.

With the win, the Mariners are in a four-way tie for second place with Classical, Moses Brown and Tiverton. All four teams are a game back of Rogers, and a game ahead of Middletown and East Greenwich. Narragansett owns the tiebreakers against Tiverton and Middletown, while Moses Brown and Rogers have the upper hand on the Mariners.

Narragansett has a bye week, then a pivotal matchup with Classical at Conley Stadium in Providence at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11. The Mariners then play 10 a.m. Thanksgiving morning at East Greenwich. Winning both games would clinch a playoff spot for Narragansett, and they need at least a split to contend for one.
