Couture, LaBove Honored with Leadership Awards

The awards from Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis recognizes students who make outstanding contributions to their schools and their community.

PROVIDENCE – Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis honored two Narragansett students with 2011 State Civic Leadership Awards, which are given annually to members of the senior class who make outstanding contributions to their schools and their community.

“This award recognizes students who show an understanding of the importance public service has in a democratic society,” Mollis said. “These students take the principles of civics and put them into action at home and at school.”

Cassandra Couture and Daniel LaBove of Narragansett High School were honored by Mollis for their achievements.

Couture is a member of the National Honor Society and the Foreign Language Honor Society. She served on Class Council and captained the cheerleading team.

LaBove is a member of the National Honor Society, Class Council and the Tolerance Committee. He also was on the soccer, wrestling and tennis teams.

Mollis asked high schools around the state to select one male and one female member of the Class of 2011 who best met the ideals of the award: public service, leadership ability and academic achievement.

More than 70 high schools ranging from Barrington High to Woonsocket High nominated seniors for the honor. This is the fifth consecutive year Mollis has presented the awards.

As Secretary of State, Mollis holds voter registration drives at high schools throughout Rhode Island. In addition, Mollis promotes civic engagement by visiting high schools to educate students about milestones such as Women's History Month and R.I. History Month.
