SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI — It is a true Christmas miracle. A dog who survived being missing for two weeks and getting hit by a car found its way home on Christmas, according to Rhode Home Rescue.

Just before 8 a.m. Dec. 11, Scout, a 1-year-old black lab, slipped out the door of his foster home, when a family member was leaving. He bolted down the street and was struck by a car in front of TLC Coffee Roasters at 3362 Kingstown Road in West Kingston.

The driver never stopped, and Scout went missing after limping into the woods.

"Obviously this part is still very upsetting to us as it is heartless, as well as illegal, to hit a dog and just keep going," Rhode Home Rescue said in a Facebook post.

The workers at the rescue feared the worst. Despite having drones and trackers continuously look for Scout, there were no sightings.

But on Wednesday, Scout somehow made his way home. On Christmas, he showed up at the door of his foster's neighbor's house. He's emaciated and limping, but still trying to play, according to Rhode Home Rescue.

"We are elated he is safe and out of the cold, but he is not in the clear yet," Rhode Home Rescue said on its Facebook page. "Unfortunately, due to being hit by the car, then having no medical help for two weeks, Scout will need surgery to have his leg amputated. He is in the care of Mass RI, who are getting him healthy again, reintroducing food and water and once he’s ready, he will undergo surgery."

Covering his medical bills will be expensive for the rescue, so Rhode Home Rescue is collecting donations to help pay for his care. As of Friday afternoon, the rescue has raised $3,240.
