Fatal Accident Saturday Night at Intersection of 108, Clarke Road

According to police, the accident occurred near Route 108 and Clarke Road. The names are being withheld until proper notification can be made.

According to Narragansett Police Department Captain William F. McGovern, a two-car accident Saturday night resulted in one fatality.

At about 10:16 p.m., the Narragansett Police Department responded to a two-car accident at the intersection of Route 108 and Clarke Road. While emergency personnel were enroute to the accident scene they were advised that one of the vehicles was on fire.

Upon emergency personnel’s arrival all of the occupants were out of the vehicles. Narragansett Fire Department arrived to distinguish the fire, provide medical treatment and transportation for the victims of the accident.

A preliminary investigation shows that a vehicle was traveling north on Route 108 approaching Clarke Road, operated by a 51-year-old Providence man. A second vehicle was traveling south on Route 108 and attempted to turn onto Clarke Road when the two vehicles collided. The vehicle was being operated by a 59-year-old Narragansett woman.

Three individuals from the northbound vehicle were transported to South County Hospital. One of the passengers, a 60-year-old woman from North Providence, was pronounced dead at South County Hospital. The other two victims were treated and released.

The accident is currently under investigation and is being reconstructed by the department’s accident reconstruction unit. The Rhode Island Medical Examiner Office will conduct an investigation to determine the victim’s cause of death. At this time the victim’s name is being held pending notification to her family.
