FIVE THINGS: Basketball, Boards and Celluloid Broadcasts

Looking for something to do today? Just looking for some random information to entertain you? Well, one of these "five things" should apply then.

Here are the five things for Tuesday, December 13, 2011:

  1. Who got game? The girls' basketball team starts off its home season tonight, hosting East Providence in a non-league game at 7 p.m. In their season opener Injury Fund game, the Mariners lost 52-26 to Division I North Kingstown. Seniors Jaclyn Iannucci, Samantha Sabetti, Hannah Collier and Raquel Harris are on the squad, along with several underclassmen.
  2. These are board meetings, not bored meetings. Looking to get involved with town politics and/or government? Today, several boards are scheduled to meet. The meets at 9:30 a.m., the meets at 6 p.m., and the meets at 7 p.m.
  3. Now Playing – The Debt. At the Maury Loontjens Memorial Library today, there of The Debt at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Contrary to what the title may imply, it is not a movie about the recent financial crisis of the United States. Instead, it is billed on IMDB as a “espionage thriller” spanning decades, starring Helen Mirren and Sam Worthington.
  4. Technology is sometimes a wonderful thing. On this day in history in 1577, Sir Francis Drake set out from Plymouth, England on his round-the-world voyage. Your kids now mostly know him as “that guy with the treasure in Uncharted.
  5. Congrats Malta! Today is Republic Day in Malta. If you don't mind a reasonable amount of trouble, that is. Make sure you celebrate by treating Goosio, friend to Maltese children everywhere, with more respect than Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot.
