LETTER: It’s Raining Cupcakes in Narragansett!

Mark your calendar for this year's Cupcake Madness!

To the editor,

Children’s author Lisa Schroeder will be visiting Rhode Island to attend the Friends of Hazard Castle’s 2012 Cupcake Madness.

Schroeder will be a special guest judge, along with a panel of esteemed pastry chefs from Johnson and Wales University, including Chef Dean Lavornia. The annual cupcake challenge for the “Best Cupcake” in RI will be held on Sunday, March 25, location to be determined.

John Shaw, the president of FOHC, has invited Schroeder to present a writer’s workshop to Narragansett Elementary School students.

We still need sponsors and private donations to help pay for travel, lodging and lecture fees associated with Schroeder’s visit. Thanks to the generosity of AAA, Belmont Market, River Bend Athletic Club, Wakefield Books, Frances Fleet and the Feinstein Foundation, we are on our way towards the goal of covering the costs of this rare opportunity for Schroeder’s visit to Rhode Island.

Now in its second year, Cupcake Madness is expected to grow exponentially because of last year’s success. Already pre-press release, we’ve had multiple new inquiries. In addition to the cupcake challenge we will also be featuring the historic art drawings of NES third grade students and the theatrical and musical talents of Narragansett students.

Schroeder will be available for book signings at Cupcake Madness. Copies of her latest children’s book, Sprinkles and Secrets, and her previously released book, It’s Raining Cupcakes, will be available for purchase at Cupcake Madness through Wakefield Books.

Have dinner with children’s author Lisa Schroeder! One lucky local family of five will have dinner with Schroeder during her visit. Raffle tickets are available for a $50 donation per raffle ticket (one ticket covers a family of five). Your raffle ticket donation is for a chance to win dinner with Lisa, and your donation automatically earns you a 2012 Friends of Hazard Castle family membership (a $50 value).

Restaurant owners interested in hosting “Dinner with Lisa” may also enter the raffle for the chance to host Schroeder and five of her guests. Host raffle tickets are available for a $50 donation, plus your donation of dinner for six at your fine eatery.

In order to jump start our budget for upcoming events in 2012, such as Up Around the Bend, and the return of our historic lecture series, multiple food and beverage challenges, including the return of the “Best Burger in R.I.” and a theatre, art and music fair following our road race in June (hopefully Friday and Saturday, June 29 and 30), FOHC needs to raise approximately $15,000.

Private large cash donations, and annual and event sponsorships, are always welcome and can be earmarked for special historic preservation projects. Annual family memberships are available for a donation of $50, and annual individual memberships are available for a donation of $25. Lifetime membership is available for a donation of $1,500.

When you also join the Narragansett Historical Society, our family membership donation is only $40 and your individual membership donation $20

We are actively recruiting volunteers and executive committee members (see our website for details). If you’re a runner or walker and would like to be a part of the race committee for our third annual 7M Road Race and Kids Fun Run, Up Around the Bend, please visit our website.

It takes a village and generous sponsors to properly execute our family fun events. Be a part of the historical movement; join Friends of Hazard Castle in “preserving our past for our future.” Volunteers make a world of difference.

What are you waiting for? Register your cupcake today, tell all your friends, the madness continues…. Cupcake Madness is Sunday, March 25.
