According to police, two people living in a home on Rockland Street told them that Boldt and D'Amore were both in the rear of the garage when they arrived home. When they asked the pair what they were doing, they said they were looking for their cat.

Police contacted the parents of one of the men, who said that the family cat was at home, safe and sound, and had not been missing the entire night. The parent was also upset with her son – the parent said he was supposed to be in South Kingstown, and wanted to know where the family car was that they had lent him. Police found the car on Boon Street, about seven blocks away from the garage.

Police arrested the two men based on the statements of the parent.

When questioned further, Boldt said they had made the story up. He told police that they were looking for a party on Rodman Street, but then saw the open garage door on Rockland Street. When the car approached, they panicked and hid inside the garage, not realizing that it was the homeowners coming home.
