Police: DWI a Laughing Matter for Cranston Man

Anthony C. Belcher, 23, of 20 Beech Ave., Cranston, was arrested at 12:18 a.m. on July 26 on a charge of driving while intoxicated. Belcher was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

According to police, an officer patrolling the Galilee Escape Road clocked a car driven by Belcher traveling at 75 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone. The officer made a U-turn, and caught up to Belcher’s car on Point Judith Road, where he noted it was straddling the dotted line between lanes before pulling into the breakdown lane for the traffic stop.

Police said when talking to Belcher, the strong smell of alcohol was immediately apparent. When they asked him how much he had had to drink, police said Belcher told them, “Way too much,” and then began to giggle.

According to police, Belcher failed a field sobriety test and refused to take a breath test. He was arrested and transported to police headquarters. His car was towed from the scene.

While at headquarters, police said Belcher told them, “Why are you doing this to me? You never arrest any of the URI kids for drinking and driving.”

Police left Belcher in a room to give him privacy for a phone call. According to police, after a minute, Belcher opened the door and began screaming and crying, and said, “You are ruining my life.”

According to police, Belcher refused to take a chemical test at police headquarters. In a statement to police, he told them he had had eight Blue Moon beers while at George’s, and was on his way to a friend’s house across the street from Charlie O’s.

Belcher was also cited for speeding and for swerving in a roadway. He was arraigned and released later that morning.

Warwick Man Charged With Felony Breaking and Entering

William Wischnowsky, 42, of 403 Commonwealth Ave., Warwick, was arrested at about 3:11 a.m. on July 26 on charges of felony breaking and entering, malicious property damage and larceny under $500.

The charges stem from a break-in at 1 State St. in Galilee on June 26. On July 26, Warwick Police arrested Wischnowsky on the Narragansett Police warrant. He was transported to Narragansett Police headquarters.

Narragansett Man Arrested for Suspended License, Expired Inspection Sticker

John A. Jackson, 52, of 1111 Point Judith Road, Narragansett, was arrested at about 4:40 p.m. on July 26 on a charge of driving with a suspended license.

According to police, an officer patrolling on Point Judith Road spotted Jackson driving a white Mazda Protégé through the Iggy’s parking lot. The officer said that because of previous arrests, he knew Jackson’s license was suspended, and confirmed this with a dispatcher.

A traffic stop was made on Point Judith Road near Homestead Avenue, at which point Jackson was arrested without incident. He was also cited for driving a car without a prior inspection. Police noted that the sticker on the Protégé had expired in November 2010.

Narragansett Woman Arrested on Warrant; Neighbor Asked to Watch Kids

Tiffany T. Whitford, 27, of 130 Caswell St., Apt. #1, Narragansett, was arrested at about 6:18 p.m. on July 26 on a Fourth Division District Court warrant. According to police, the warrant was issued after Whitford did not attend a hearing for a Narragansett police suspended license charge.

According to police, an officer patrolling on Caswell Street noticed Whitford as she was entering her home. The officer knew there was a warrant out for her arrest and placed her into custody without incident.

Police said Whitford was allowed to make arrangements with her neighbor, a 34-year-old woman, to watch her children. According to police, Whitford was transferred to the ACI that night before being arraigned in court on July 27 and released.
