Narragansett Police Log: October 13, 2011
An allegedly drunk driver asks police if he's going to be arrested.

Unless otherwise noted, information about the following incidents was supplied by the Narragansett Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.
Alleged Drunk Driver: “Is This Where I Get Arrested?”
James M. Ryan, 22, of 137 Boston Neck Road, Apt. #21, Narragansett, was arrested at about 12:17 a.m. on Oct. 13 and charged with driving while intoxicated. He was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

According to police, an officer clocked a truck driven by Ryan at 78 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone on Point Judith Road. As a result, the officer did a U-turn and attempted to catch up with the vehicle, a red 1999 Ford F-150.
Police said the officer saw the truck turn on to Lambert Street, and he found it shortly after, crashed against a bulkhead and wooden fence. Police said Ryan was slouched over the wheel in the driver’s seat.

According to police, Ryan smelled of alcohol. Police asked him several questions to test his coherency, which he answered, and a rescue unit from Narragansett Fire also did an evaluation.
Police asked Ryan if he would submit to a field sobriety test. At that point, police said Ryan replied, “Is this where I get arrested?” He then agreed to take the test.
According to police, Ryan failed a field sobriety test, and was placed under arrest. He was also cited for failing to submit to a chemical test, speeding 48 miles more than the limit, operating a motor vehicle unsafely in adverse conditions (rain), failure to maintain proper control of a motor vehicle, and swerving.
Foreshadowing: Warwick Man Arrested for Bench Warrant in Same Location as DWI
Duane Michael Erwin, 42, of 25 Emmons St., Apt. #2, Warwick, was arrested at about 11:55 a.m. on Oct. 13 for a Third Division District Court bench warrant. According to police, the warrant stemmed for a Warwick police arrest for a suspended license.
According to police, an officer patrolling on Lambert Street saw a car pulled too far forward in a parking spot. Police said the car was over the curb and into the wood line.
Police said Erwin was sleeping in the driver’s seat. A background check revealed the warrant out for his arrest.
Later that day, a DWI would occur in the same parking lot. (See above arrest.) However, there is no indication that the arrests are connected.
South Kingstown Police Arrest Narragansett Residents for Disorderly Conduct at Bowling Lane
According to , at about 12:08 a.m. on Oct. 13, South Kingstown police responded to the Old Mountain Lanes for a reported disturbance.
According to dispatch reports, an employee of the establishment had reported that three to four females were involved in a fight. Police officers arrived at the scene and discovered two groups of people separated in the parking lot.
The officers began to interview the involved parties and located a male who had videotaped part of the incident using his cell phone.
The officers determined that the fight escalated from a verbal argument that had occurred earlier, when two of the females bumped into each other at the entrance to the Lanes.
After several interviews police identified the aggressors as Tara E. Carvahlo, 18, of 4 Chestnut Ave., Apt. B, and Jenneya A. Smith, 19, of 6B Rockland St.
Both women were taken to SKPD and charged with disorderly conduct and simple assault. They were processed and released with Fourth District Court summonses for October 20.
Three Cited at Bon Vue Inn for Fake IDs
According to police, three women were cited at the Bon Vue Inn for using fake IDs on the night of Oct. 13. The women were identified as:
- 20-year-old University of Rhode Island student Adeline J. Benge, of 280 Kingstown Road, Narragansett.
- 20-year-old University of Rhode Island student Laura M. Ryan, of 78 Durkin Drive, Narragansett.
- 20-year-old University of Rhode Island student Kelley C. Willis, of 7314 Hartland Hill Road, Woodstock, VT.
All three were cited after background checks by police at the request of Bon Vue bouncers.
