Narragansett Police Log: September 10, 2011

URI Student Arrested for DWI

Kara M. Zuercher, 21, of 27 Davisville Lane, Narragansett, was arrested at about 12:19 a.m. on Sept. 10 and charged with driving while intoxicated. Police said she is a University of Rhode Island student.

According to police, an officer patrolling on Ashton Lane saw a Hyundai traveling on the wrong side of the road with its high beams on, approaching the cruiser. Police said it narrowly avoided hitting the car, and then sped up, going through the stop sign at Sakonnet Boulevard without stopping.

Police said they were able to make a traffic stop on Sakonnet Boulevard, after the car had hit a rock. According to police, the driver – Zuercher – apologized and repeatedly said, “I’m sorry, I’m just trying to get home.” Police noted that she smelled of alcohol and had glassy, red eyes.

According to police, it took Zuercher about seven minutes to find her registration. Police said she couldn’t find her license or insurance card, and instead tried to give them sales ads, her AAA card and stationary. Police said when they asked her where she was going, she said, “I dropped a friend off at 27 Davisville Lane, and I’m going to 27 Davisville Lane.”

Police said they attempted to give Zuercher a field sobriety test, but she struggled at first to take off her high heel shoes. Police said they had to take her shoes off for her after she failed to do so after several attempts. She then failed the field sobriety test, and was placed under arrest.

According to police, Zuercher consented to a blood alcohol test at police headquarters. Police said the breathalyzer test showed her blood alcohol content to be .277 and .257.

Warwick Man Arrested for Possession of Marijuana

Ryan J. Arpin, 19, of 289 Lake Shore Drive, Warwick, was arrested at about 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 10 and charged with possession of marijuana.

According to police, an officer patrolling on Ocean Road saw a purple Hyundai Accent parked along the seawall. The officer noted that there were three men in the car, with the windows up, even though the temperature was 75 degrees.

Police said the officer parked along Central Street to observe the vehicle. The officer noted that one of the passengers was eating Doritos, while the other was looking at the ocean. However, he said the driver – Arpin – was looking down at his lap the entire time and did not lift his head.

According to police, as the officer got out of his car and approached the Accent, he saw a white piece of paper with marijuana on it, along with a plastic baggie of marijuana in the car. He knocked on the window and had Arpin exit, and then arrested him for possession of marijuana.

Riverside Man Enters Wrong House, Throws Up on Couch

According to police, a pair of 21-year-old Narragansett women did not wish to press charges against an unknown 19-year-old Riverside man sleeping on their couch, even though he had also thrown up on it.

Police said they responded to a home on Desano Drive after receiving a report of an unknown man sleeping on the couch. The residents said that they thought he might have mistaken their home for 34 Desano Drive.

The residents told police that the man had vomited all over their couch. Police woke the man up and escorted him next door, where a friend took responsibility for him. The man also provided the girls with $80 to get the couch cleaned.

Connecticut Man Cited for Transportation of Alcohol by a Minor

Clinton T. Vanderlinden the Third, 20, of 86 Graham Road, South Winsor, CT, was cited at about 1:55 a.m. on Sept. 10 and charged with transportation of alcohol by a minor.

According to police, an officer patrolling on Point Judith Road stopped a car driven by Vanderlinden for speeding. Police said a bottle of wine was visible on the front seat.

Police said none of the occupants of the car were 21. Vanderlinden was cited for the offense, as well as for speeding. According to online records, he is a URI student.

Loud Party of URI Students Reported on Ocean Road

At about 12:14 a.m. on Sept. 10, police received a report of a loud party at 1191 Ocean Road.

According to police, there were about 20 people inside the house and another 20 on a side deck. Police said the partygoers were yelling loudly, and also playing loud music.

Police said the party was cleared without incident. The tenants were identified as Scott McClutchy and Keith A. Bruni, both 22 and University of Rhode Island students. The realty company was listed as Durkin Cottages.
