Oven Fire On Nooseneck Hill Road On Sunday Night

A woman was taken to Kent County Hospital for minor smoke inhalation, the fire department said.

COVENTRY, RI — A woman went to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation on Sunday night after a fire started in the oven in her home. According to Chief Frank Brown, of the Hopkins Hill and Central Coventry districts, the rescue workers took her to the hospital as a precaution. The fire started around 8 p.m. at a Nooseneck Hill Road home. The firefighters used a fire extinguisher to knock it down in about five minutes. The Anthony, Western Coventry, Central Coventry, and Hopkins Hill districts all responded.

"There was a lot of smoke in the house," he said. The cause of the fire was determined to be a self-cleaning oven feature combined with a mouse problem. It appeared mice had gotten into the stove and were stashing "several dozen" dog treats, known as dog snaps, under the cooktop.

The dog treats "had probably been smoldering" for some time, Brown said, and then the self-cleaning mechanism turned the heat up.
