Pier School Shoots Past Riverside in Playoffs [VIDEO]

Thanks to clutch play down the stretch from Jack Clancey, William Doyle and Lance Waranis, the Mariners upset Riverside and continue playing in the Rhode Island middle school boys' basketball playoffs.

RIVERSIDE – Thanks to six fourth quarter points from Jack Clancey and five from William Doyle, the Narragansett Pier School boys' basketball team escaped Riverside Middle School with a 54-52 upset against the hosts.

Clancey finished with a team-high 19, and Doyle chipped in 15 points. However, the player of the game was Riverside's Adam Duarte. After being held to eight first half points, he exploded for 11 in the third quarter, and finished with 23 points, primarily on drives to the rim through the Narragansett defense.

In the clutch though, the Mariners were able to defend Duarte, and he tired by the fourth quarter, missing his final two free throws. The rest of Riverside only combined for nine second half points.

Duarte had a chance to win the game with a long and contested 3-point shot with about five seconds, but it clanged high off the backboard, and the Mariners secured the rebound to end the game.

Narragansett took the lead for good with about five minutes remaining. Clancey, getting a screen from Lance Waranis, stepped back and launched a 3-point shot, which swished through. Duarte tied the game on the next possession with a bucket, but Doyle and Clancey kept the Mariners ahead the rest of the game with a bucket and 3-for-4 shooting from the free throw line.

Waranis did the work down low most of the game for the Mariners, finishing with 17 points. Tyler Gershkoff was the only other Narragansett player to score, hitting a 3-pointer in the first half.

However, several other players contributed, especially defensively. Austin McKanna, Nate Rainone, Paul Carvalho and Gershkoff all took turns defending Duarte in a match-up zone, and Taylor Turquotte combined with Waranis and Doyle on the boards to limit second chance points by Riverside.

With the win, the Mariners will play 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Smithfield at Gallagher Middle School (11-1, 11-1 Central Division). For directions, click here. For the full playoff bracket, see the attached PDF.
