Rhode Island Residents Can Sign Up For Free Trees

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Managemnt has 1,000 saplings available for residents.

RHODE ISLAND — Rhode Island residents can sign up for a free tree sapling from the Department of Environmental Management, in conjunction with the RI Tree Council, RI Nursery and Landscape Association and the Arbor Day Foundation. 1,000 saplings are available, just in time for spring planting.

"Planting a tree in the right place can improve air quality, sequester carbon, and help manage stormwater runoff," said Ken Ayars, the DEM's agriculture and forestry chief. "It's a terrific way for Rhode Islanders to reduce their energy costs today and in the years to come, and a tangible way to stand up to climate change. We're especially pleased to offer free trees now, when many of us are spending more time in our backyards because of the pandemic."

Starting Friday, Rhode Islanders can sign up for the program, which aims to help residents save energy and reduce energy bills. To sign up, register online, select the preferred type of tree and choose a pick-up location.
