Soccer, Volleyball Both in Playoff Games Today

The girls' soccer team looks to continue in an undefeated season, and the girls' volleyball team wants to "upset" West Warwick.

A pair of Narragansett sports teams are in playoff action today, as the girls’ soccer team hosts Shea and the girls’ volleyball team travels to West Warwick. Soccer starts at 3 p.m., and volleyball is at 6 p.m.

The soccer squad is 16-0 in Division III play, taking the first seed by two games and earning the right to host No. 8 Shea. After beating Shea 3-1 on Sept. 13, and outscoring opponents 99-15 during the year, the Mariners will be the heavy favorites Monday afternoon.

If the Mariners win, they travel to Cranston Stadium for a neutral location match-up. Interestingly enough though, for the second year in a row it might not be a neutral game.

Last year, Middletown upset St. Raphael’s in the semifinals at home, partially because the “neutral” location for the game was Gaudet Middle School in Middletown.

This year, St. Raphael’s was upset at home in the quarterfinals by Cranston East. As a result, East will have a home game against Narragansett or Shea 5 p.m. Thursday in the Division III semifinals.

The finals will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Rhode Island College. Other teams still alive in the other bracket are Middletown, Moses Brown, Burrillville and West Warwick.

The Mariners have already made school history with an undefeated regular season. They could add two more records though – back-to-back titles, and going perfect for the year, excluding an Injury Fund game against Portsmouth.

Volleyball

The girls’ volleyball squad is seeded fifth to West Warwick’s fourth, but the two teams are evenly matched on paper. Both finished 12-2 in Division II, but West Warwick won a few more games in the North division than Narragansett did in the South.

If the Mariners win, they will advance to the semifinals Wednesday at Keaney Gym against Exeter-West Greenwich or Pilgrim. EWG has been a nemesis of the Mariners all year, winning 6-1 in two matches.

Wednesday’s match is scheduled for 6 p.m. The final is 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at Keaney Gym.

It has been a successful season for the Mariners already though – They hadn’t won 12 games in a season since 2006, which came after an 18-0 finish in 2005. Last year, Narragansett finished 9-5 and earned a nine-seed, but were bounced in the first round of the playoffs by No. 8 Tolman.
