South Kingstown Police Launch Campaign To Promote A Safe Summer

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI — The South Kingstown Police Department has launched its summer safety campaign, the #SafeSummerSK initiative.

"We all look forward to longer days and warm weather, but the summer months can be a dangerous time on our roads, particularly for younger drivers," Police Chief Matthew Moynihan, said. "This summer, we’re increasing patrols and will be sharing public safety messaging focused on reminding drivers about preventing traffic fatalities. We are focused on curbing impaired driving, distracted driving, and speeding — and of course, reminding everyone to buckle up, every time."

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the summer months of June, July, and August have the highest number of traffic fatalities compared to other seasons. So #SafeSummerSK will encompass enforcement and education efforts around bicycles, motorcycles and pedestrians.

"We want to make our roads safe for everyone who uses them, and we know that reminding the public that they have a role to play in making their community safer is key to our success," Moynihan said. "We’re asking drivers to be particularly careful as they navigate our roads this summer, giving pedestrians, bicycles and motorcycles the space they need to be safe."

Police said the initiative will be featured on the department’s social media accounts this summer.

The safety campaign was funded through a grant from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation Office of Highway Safety with support from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
